Trail Description

This ride takes in the start of the Lerderderg Heritage River Walk between Blackwood township and the Garden of St Erth before tackling Razzas Track in the uphill direction for a bit of technical climbing, along Telstra Track to O'Briens Road, down the fun fire trail that is Kangaroo Track before tackling an almost unmakeable drop down to the Byers Back Track and back to town.  This ride comes back along the bitumen but you could divert onto the Morning Star Track or Old Coach Road if desired.

It is quite hard to categorise this ride in terms of difficulty as it has a large number of riding surfaces and trail types. The single trail from Skinners Road to Razzas Track is fairly straightforward (part of St Erth loop - not shown above). The climb up Razzas track (cream colour on map) is makeable but very steep and littered with rocks, rain gutters, etc to test your skill. Telstra Track is straightforward as is the short distance along O'Briens Road. Kangaroo Track (yellow track in map above) is a fun trail being an undulating track with a general downhill run to the gorge. The track has a large number of raised sections for drainage purposes which allows experienced riders to get some minor air time on the way down for a bit of fun. The last section is extremely steep and just makeable requiring full on brakes all the way down. Chuck a left onto the Byers Back Track single track and enjoy the run back into Blackwood.

The top of Kangaroo Track has views across the Gorge and all of the off road tracks are pleasant to ride along. The description of the ride starts in Blackwood township and heads in an anti clockwise direction.

The following photo gallery has been taken in order from the Blackwood pub heading west to Skinners Road and then doing the circuit in an anti clockwise direction.

Blackwood To Skinners Road

From left to right, Blackwood Pub is the starting point for the ride. Head south down Martin Street and turn right at the Cobb and Co Store into Simmons Reef Road. Head down the hill to Skinners Road and turn left into it. Head up hill approximately 500 m until you get to a trail marker on the right hand side of the road (see first and second pictures below).

Follow single trail.

Skinners Road To Razzas Track

Below are photos of the initial part of the track showing how it quickly narrows down to a single lane track. From the sign information, the trail has been built along the old water races which were used for carrying water for mining operations. If you look out to the right about a kilometre down the track you will see the water races in the bush.

After you get to the track veering off to the right, follow the track for 900 metres. You will get to a rough intersection with a trail heading steeply up to the left and down into the valley on the right. The track is very rough being a popular motor bike run. Head left up the track for a technical climb to the Greendale Trentham Road. Below are typical pictures of the track. This is Razzas Track.

Pictures of Razzas Track heading off to the left - a steep climb averaging 8% gradient.

Clay, rocks and roots thrown in to make for a hardish climb.

About halfway up there is a single track off to the right and left which have some root ridden surfaces adding to the technical nature of the climb. The main track up is heavily rutted from rain and vehicles.

You will come out at the Wombat sign on the Greendale - Trentham Road.

Greendale-Trentham Road to Kangaroo Track

Follow the Telstra Track along the western side of the Greendale - Trentham Road up to O' Briens Road shown above. Follow O'Briens Road down until you get to the gated entrance to Kangaroo Track. Kangaroo Track is one of the few trails in the Lerderderg State Park on which bike access is permitted.

Follow Kangaroo Track. The track gently undulates on the top section.

Middle photo below shows a typical drain hump. There are plenty of these on the way down making for good jumps.

Rising to the high point of Kangaroo Track you get some good views of the gorge area through the trees.

Webster's Track above is an alternative to get back to Blackwood on a fire trail instead of the Byer's Back Track single track and avoids the steep section into the gorge.

The bottom section of the trail coming down to Byers Back Track is absolutely shredded and extremely steep - the photos don't really give a sense of how steep it really is. The Byers Back Track turnoff is halfway down. You will be right on the brakes all of the way down! Turn left onto Byers Back Track and follow back to town or head out to O'Brien's Crossing if you want to do a long ride. Details of this track are included under that ride.

Alternative Route via Morning Star Track and Deadmans Track

From the top of Razza's Track, pick up the start of the Morning Star Track which is across the road and slightly up the hill from the big wombat sign - refer Morning Star Track notes. Follow Morning Star Track and turn right at Deadman's Track. Follow this down to the gate and continue following track down to gorge. Track gives a constant downhill run down to the gorge and is fairly rain guttered to make it slightly interesting. When you get to Byers Back Track, head to the right to see the Tunnel or O'Briens Crossing and left to head back to Blackwood.

If you turn right you can follow Byers Back Track to Tunnel Point (below right) - refer Byers Back Track notes.
